    GEOGRAPHY OPTIONAL: PERFORMANCE BAROMETER-1:

    TIME: 3 HOURS MARKS: 250

    1. Q1:  Illustrate your answers with suitable sketches, maps and diagrams wherever necessary. These shall be drawn in the space provided for answering the question itself.

    2. Q2:  There are EIGHT questions divided into two Sections. Candidate has to attempt FIVE questions in all.

    3. Q3:  Question Nos. 1 and 5 are compulsory and out of the remaining, THREE are to be attempted choosing at least ONE question from each Section.

    4. Q4:  The number of marks carried by a question/part is indicated against it.

    Q5: Word limit in questions, wherever specified, should be adhered to.

    Q6: Attempts of questions shall be counted in chronological order. Unless struck off, attempt of a question shall be counted even if attempted partly. Any page or portion of the page left blank in the Question-cum-Answer Booklet must be clearly struck off.

    SECTION : A

    Q1: Answer the following in150 words each: 10 x 5 = 50 marks

    1. On the outline map of India provided to you, mark the location of all of the following.

      Write in your TEST Booklet the significance of these locations, whether physical/commercial/economic/ecological environmental/cultural, in not more than 30 words for each entry:

      1. Siachen Glacier.
      2. Kedarnath.
      3. Kebul Lamjao.
      4. Govind Ballav Pant Sagar. 5. Kolleru Lake.

    2. Physiography of india are not only complementary to each other but also present a model for small globe. Discuss.

    3. Explain the difference in stress direction and displacement among the types of faults viz. Normal, Reverse, Thrust and strike slip.

    d. Highlight the difference between the hot spot trail and the volcanic arc?

    e. Even if the two different regions have similar magnitude and intensity of the earthquakes, the destruction may not be similar. Discuss.

    a. The mystery of the fold mountain orogeny is very scientifically resolved by the theory of

    plate tectonics. Discuss.

    1. Wagner's continental drift theory was rejected initially only to be accepted later on .

      Highlight the reasons behind its poor acceptance at that time.

    2. Discuss the general relationship in the global earthquake and plate boundaries with

      special emphasis over the difference in intensity and magnitude of each boundaries.

      1. Discuss the role of structure as a factor in the development of landform with suitable examples.

      2. Describe SEA FLOOR SPREADING and explain how it was an important piece of evidence in support of PLATE TECTONICS.

      3. Discuss the fundamental difference between the convergent boundaries.

    2. Q4:  Answer following (20 + 15 + 15 marks)

      a. Explain weathering and mass wasting, and describe their geomorphic significance.
      b. Critically compare the theory of Isostasy presented by Pratt and Airy.
      c. Occurrence of the types of volcanic eruption is largely related to the types of plate

      boundaries. Discuss.

    c. Differentiate between Talus cone and solifluction.
    d. Discuss the intensity of folding in different parts of Himalaya.
    e. Highlight the reasons for the absence of volcanic eruptions over Himalaya.

    a. Discuss the basic geological structure of the Western Ghat.
    b. How the Chota nagpur plateau is different from Deccan plateau?
    c. Discuss the basic difference in the Oceanic crust and Continental crust.

    Q7: Answer the following. (20 + 15 + 15 marks)

    1. The evolution of the theory of Plate Tectonics has a long history behind it. Discuss.

    2. What do you mean by geomorphic process? Highlight the difference between these forces.

     

    c. Though Himalayan mountain is mainly known for its advantages yet it has many disadvantages. Discuss.

    Q8: Answer the following. (20 + 15 + 15 marks)

    1. What are the main factors of origin of Tsunami? Why the waves generated in a Tsunami

      is non detectable till the coast?

    2. What do you men by Geomagnetism? How it was helpful in the evolution of the theory of

      Plate Tectonics?

    3. Highlight the border issues between India and China.
